Jacob (Jakob) Bernoulli (1655–1705) was a Swiss mathematician and a member of the Bernoulli family. An early proponent of Leibnizian calculus, he was, with his brother Johann, one of the founders of the calculus of variations, and he discovered the fundamental mathematical constant e. His most important contribution was in probability, where in his work Ars Conjectandi he derived the first version of the law of large numbers.
