James Arthur Baldwin (1924-1987) was an American novelist, writer, playwright, poet, essayist and civil rights activist. Most of his work deals with racial and sexual issues in mid-20th century United States, exploring identity and the social and psychological pressures of being black and homosexual before equality for these groups had improved.
