James Hogg was a Scottish poet, novelist, and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. He worked as a shepherd and farmhand in his youth and was largely self-educated through reading. He was a friend of prominent writers of his time, including Sir Walter Scott, and was known as the "Ettrick Shepherd," a name under which some of his works were published. His notable works include the novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, the long poem The Queen's Wake, and the collection Jacobite Relics.
