James Drewry Stewart, MSC, was a Canadian mathematician and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He earned his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1967, followed by two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London, where his research focused on harmonic and functional analysis. He was widely recognized for his series of calculus textbooks used in high school, college, and university courses across many countries, including the influential Calculus: Early Transcendentals (1995). Stewart was also a former member of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.
