Jane Austen was an English writer who lived from 1775 to 1817. She wrote novels that were widely read during her lifetime, though she published her works under a pseudonym. Her heroines often focused on themes of courtship and marriage. Austen never married herself. Among her most famous works are Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, and Emma, published in 1816. The writer Virginia Woolf praised Austen, calling her "the most perfect artist among women."
