Jean S. MacLeod was a Scottish author known for writing contemporary romance novels, many of which were set in her native Scotland or in exotic locations such as Spain and the Caribbean, places she visited for research. She began her writing career by contributing stories to The People's Friend and sold her first romance novel in 1936. From 1948 to 1965, she published works under the pseudonym Catherine Airlie, and she continued writing until 1996, the year after her husband's death. She was a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association, where she encountered the writer Barbara Cartland, who was not notably friendly toward her.
