Johannes Trithemius, born Johann Heidenberg, was a German Benedictine abbot and polymath associated with the German Renaissance. He was recognized as a lexicographer, chronicler, cryptographer, and occultist, and was considered the founder of modern cryptography and steganography, as well as bibliography and literary studies. His work had a significant impact on early modern and modern occultism, and he taught notable figures such as Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and Paracelsus. Trithemius lived from 1462 to 1516.
