John Allyn (Smith) Berryman was an American poet who emerged as a major figure in American poetry during the second half of the 20th century. He is often considered one of the founders of the Confessional school of poetry and is best known for his work The Dream Songs, which are characterized as playful, witty, and morbid. Berryman committed suicide in 1972.
