John Kennedy Toole (December 17, 1937 – March 26, 1969) was an American novelist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is best known for his posthumously published novel A Confederacy of Dunces, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and became a major success. He also wrote The Neon Bible. Despite recognition of his writing skills from some in the literary world, his novels were rejected during his lifetime. He struggled with paranoia and depression, which were partly attributed to these rejections. He died by suicide at the age of 31.
