John le Carré, born David John Moore Cornwell on 19 October 1931, was a British novelist best known for his morally complex Cold War espionage fiction. He drew on his own experience as an intelligence officer with MI5 and MI6 to craft the George Smiley series, which includes landmark works such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He remained one of the most acclaimed voices in spy fiction until his death on 12 December 2020.
