José Carlos Somoza Ortega (born November 13, 1959) is a Spanish author who was born in Havana, Cuba. His family moved to Spain in 1960 after being exiled for political reasons. They faced financial difficulties upon arrival, as they were allowed to bring only their child with them. They received support from many friends during their early years in Spain. Somoza earned a Bachelor's Degree in psychiatry but left medicine to become a full-time writer in 1994. That same year, he began submitting his work to literature competitions, magazines, and publishers across Spain. His first book was published in 1994. His fifth novel, The Cave of Ideas, gained international recognition, confirming his decision to pursue writing.
