José de Alencar (1829-1877) was a Brazilian lawyer, politician, orator, novelist and dramatist, considered one of the most famous and influential Brazilian Romantic novelists of the 19th century and a major exponent of "Indianism," romantic tales of indigenous life incorporating Amerindian vocabulary for flora, fauna, and tribal customs. He is noted as the founder of Brazil's nationally themed novel.
