Joyce Cary was an Irish novelist and artist born in Derry, Ireland. His family had been landlords in Donegal since Elizabethan times, but lost their property after the passage of the Irish Land Act in 1882. He spent many summers in Ireland during his childhood and later wrote about his upbringing in fictionalized works such as A House of Children and Castle Corner. Cary lived most of his life in England, though he maintained a deep affection for his Irish roots.
