Juan Ramón Jiménez Mantecón was a Spanish poet born in Moguer, Spain, on December 23, 1881, and died in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 29, 1958. He was a significant figure in Spanish-language poetry and modern Western poetry. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956 for the overall body of his work, which was described as "an example of high spirit and artistic purity." His most notable work is the lyrical prose piece Platero y yo. Jiménez was also known for promoting the idea of "pure poetry."
