Julian Jaynes was an American psychologist who worked at the universities of Yale and Princeton for nearly 25 years. He is best known for his 1976 book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, which explored the problem of consciousness through multiple disciplines. His work examined the difference between how others see individuals and their inner sense of self, as well as the deep feelings that sustain it. Jaynes's research engaged with neuroscience, linguistics, psychology, archaeology, history, religion, and analysis of ancient texts.
