Julian Symons was a British writer known for his diverse literary output, including crime fiction, poetry, biography, and historical writing. He gained early recognition as editor of the literary magazine Twentieth Century Verse, which featured emerging poets outside the Auden circle. His crime fiction earned critical acclaim, with two works—The Colour of Murder and The Progress of Crime—receiving awards as the best books of their respective years. He also authored a study of the crime genre titled Bloody Murder, as well as works on historical events and notable figures.
