Julie Otsuka (born 1962) is a Japanese-American author known for drawing on her own family history to write historical novels about the lives of Japanese Americans. Her first novel, When the Emperor Was Divine (2002), concerns the Japanese-American internment camps of 1942–45. Her second novel, The Buddha in the Attic (2011), follows the Japanese "picture brides" who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s, and her third, The Swimmers (2022), draws on her experience as the daughter of a mother with frontotemporal dementia.
