Julien Offray de La Mettrie was a French physician and philosopher who was one of the earliest French materialists of the Enlightenment. He is best known for his 1747 work L'homme machine, in which he argued that human behavior could be explained by physical processes. His work contributed to the development of philosophical materialism.
