Julio Florencio Cortázar was an Argentine writer, poet, and professor. He also worked as a translator for the Unesco and several publishing houses. In 1981, he chose French nationality in protest against the military dictatorship in Argentina, which had banned his books and forced him to denounce it from Paris. He is considered one of the most innovative and original writers of his time, known for his short stories, poetic prose, and brief narratives. His novel Rayuela marked a new way of writing in the Spanish-speaking world. Alongside Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Carlos Fuentes, he was a central figure of the Latin American literary boom. He was born in Ixelles on August 26, 1914, and died in Paris on February 12, 1984.
