Kader Abdolah, born Hossein Sadjadi Ghaemmaghami Farahani in Arak on December 12, 1954, is a Persian-Dutch writer who settled in the Netherlands in 1988. His father, a deaf-mute carpet restorer with a mental disability, meant Abdolah took on a father role from a young age. He studied physics at the University of Tehran, joined a leftist party opposing the shah and later the ayatollahs, and fled Iran in 1985, eventually becoming a writer, columnist, and university guest writer in the Netherlands.
