Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was a German botanist and explorer who travelled 10,000 km through Brazil between 1817 and 1820, collecting botanical specimens. He initiated the comprehensive flora of Brazil, Flora Brasiliensis, in 1840, which was completed posthumously in 1906. Martius was born in 1794 and died in 1868.
