Kate Seredy was a Hungarian-born writer and illustrator of children's books who wrote most of her works in English, a language which was not her first. She received the Newbery Medal once, the Newbery Honor twice, the Caldecott Honor once, and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. Her stories often reflected her Hungarian heritage, though she remains largely unknown in Hungary and has not been translated into Hungarian.
