Langston Hughes was a writer, editor, and lecturer who achieved fame as a poet during the Harlem Renaissance. He also worked as a novelist, columnist, playwright, and essayist, and his writing was influenced by his world travels. Following the example of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Hughes became the second African American to earn a living as a writer. His diverse body of work spanned multiple genres and inspired many subsequent African American writers.
