Laozi (Chinese: 老子; pinyin: Lǎozǐ; Wade–Giles: Laosi; also known by other variations) was a semi-legendary Chinese philosopher of the 6th century BC, traditionally regarded as the founder of Taoism. He is also known as Taishang Laojun in Taoist religion, where he is considered "One of the Three Pure Ones." Laozi, meaning "old master," is often seen as an honorific title. His work is central to Taoist thought, and he is revered as a deity in most religious forms of Taoism. According to tradition, Laozi lived during the 6th century BC, though historians debate whether he was a single historical figure, a synthesis of multiple figures, or a mythical figure. His writings have been influential in Chinese culture, and his ideas have been embraced by various anti-authoritarian movements throughout history.
