Leo Lionni (1910–1999) was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. Born in the Netherlands, he lived in Italy before moving to the United States in 1939, where he worked as an art director for advertising agencies and for Fortune magazine. He returned to Italy in 1962 and began writing and illustrating children's books, and his book Inch by Inch received the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. He is credited with Swimmy.
