Leon Marcus Uris was an American novelist born in Baltimore, Maryland, to William and Anna Uris. His father, who had immigrated from Poland, worked as a paperhanger. Uris attended schools in Maryland and Virginia but did not graduate from high school. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of seventeen and served in the South Pacific and New Zealand during World War II. After the war, he worked briefly as a driver for a newspaper before becoming a full-time writer after 1950. Uris published his first novel, Battle Cry, at the age of twenty-nine. He also wrote the screenplay for Gunfight at the OK Corral and achieved international recognition for his novel Exodus.
