Lillian Hellman (1905-1984) was an American dramatist and screenwriter born in New Orleans, who spent her childhood between New Orleans and New York and attended New York University and Columbia. In 1934 she launched her playwriting career with The Children's Hour, and over the following three decades twice won the New York Drama Critics Circle Prize for best play. Her memoir An Unfinished Woman won the 1969 National Book Award.
