Sir Moses I. Finley CBE, FBA, was a classical scholar of American and British nationality, known for his work on the ancient economy and social structures of the classical world. He was born in New York City in 1912 and later became a British subject. His academic career included teaching positions at Columbia University, City College of New York, and Rutgers University, though he was dismissed from Rutgers in 1952 during the Red Scare. He was later summoned by the United States Senate Internal Security Subcommittee in 1954, where he invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to questions about Communist Party membership.
