Magha was a Sanskrit poet at the court of King Varmalata at Shrimala, then the capital of Gujarat, and is traditionally placed in the 7th century. Born into a Shrimali Brahmin family, he was the son of Dattaka Sarvacharya and grandson of Suprabhadeva. His epic poem (mahākāvya), the Shishupala Vadha, comprises 20 cantos and retells the Mahabharata episode in which Krishna beheads the defiant king Shishupala; Magha is often compared with the earlier poet Bharavi.
