Rahul Sankrityayan (1893–1963) was an Indian scholar, travel writer, and Buddhist scholar known as the Father of Hindi Travel Literature. He spent forty-five years traveling, often away from his home, and was recognized as a polymath and polyglot. He became a Buddhist monk and later embraced Marxist Socialism. Sankrityayan was also an Indian nationalist who was arrested and jailed for three years for his anti-British writings and speeches. He was honored with the title Mahapandit, meaning the Greatest Scholar of all time.
