Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (14 June 1939 – 18 October 2003) was a Spanish writer from Catalonia. He worked as a journalist, novelist, poet, essayist, and critic. He was also a political prisoner and a gastronome. He began writing poetry in 1967 and was part of the Novísimos group. His early poetry was collected in Memoria y deseo (1986). His novels, including Los mares del Sur, part of the Pepe Carvalho series, won the Planeta Award in 1979. He wrote a children's book in 1988 and other works such as Galíndez, El estrangulador, and Erec y Enide. He also wrote Autobiografía del general Franco, which won the Premio Internacional de Literatura Ennio Flaiano in 1994. He wrote non-literary works in Catalan, including L'art del menjar a Catalunya. He contributed to El País and died in Bangkok while returning from a speaking tour in Australia. His last book, La aznaridad, was published after his death.
