Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180, ruling with Lucius Verus as co-emperor until Verus' death in 169, and is considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. His general Avidius Cassius sacked the Parthian capital Ctesiphon in 164, and Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi and Sarmatians in the Marcomannic Wars while suppressing a revolt led by Cassius in the east.
