Margaret Campbell Wood was born on 17 February 1891 in Rotherfield, Sussex, England, the youngest of ten children. She was educated at small private schools in Paris and London, married Peter Barnes in 1917, and had two sons, Michael and John. She wrote historical novels, including the Shadows of the Crown series, with the majority composed between the 1940s and 1950s, and her final novel, Lady on the Coin, completed posthumously by Hebe Elsna. Over two million copies of her historical novels have been sold worldwide.
