Margaretha Shemin was born in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, and educated at the University of Leiden. She moved to America and worked as a children’s librarian while writing books set in Holland that aim to challenge stereotypes of the Dutch and their country. Her stories, including The Empty Moat and The Little Riders, draw on her experiences during World War II, when her father was active in the Dutch resistance. The Little Riders was adapted into a film by Disney in 1996.
