Marguerite Henry was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the youngest of five children. She began writing at an early age and had her first story published at eleven. After completing high school, she attended Milwaukee State Teachers College. She later married and lived in Wayne, Illinois, where she wrote over forty books, primarily fiction about horses, earning the Newbery Honor for Justin Morgan Had a Horse in 1945 and the Newbery Medal for King of the Wind in 1949.
