Marie Belloc Lowndes was the daughter of Louis Marie Belloc and Elizabeth Rayner Parkes, born in George Street, Marylebone, London. Her mother, Elizabeth Rayner Parkes, also known as 'Bessie', was a prominent figure in the early women's suffrage movement in England and the granddaughter of Joseph Priestley, the Unitarian minister and scientist. 'Bessie' had edited the magazine The Englishwoman's Review for eight years, a publication regarded as an important voice for women's advancement.
