Martha Gellhorn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of a suffragette and a gynecologist. She attended Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia but left before graduating in 1927 to pursue a career as a journalist. She worked as a foreign correspondent for the United Press in France and later reported on the Spanish Civil War, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and World War II across multiple regions including Finland, Hong Kong, Burma, Singapore, and Britain. She became known for her firsthand reporting from war zones and developed a close friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt after her work with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
