Matthew Desmond is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology and Principal Investigator of The Eviction Lab. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and was a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows. His research and teaching focus on urban sociology, poverty, race and ethnicity, organizations and work, social theory, and ethnography. He is the author of several books, including Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, and has contributed scholarly work on topics such as eviction, the low-income rental market, and network-based survival strategies among the urban poor.
