Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775–1818) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his contributions to the Gothic horror genre. His most famous work, The Monk, published in 1796, earned him the nickname "Monk" Lewis. He also held positions as a diplomat, politician, and estate owner in Jamaica. His literary works are frequently associated with the Gothic tradition.
