Maurine Dallas Watkins (1896–1969) was an American playwright and screenwriter. Early in her career she worked briefly as a journalist covering the courthouse beat for the Chicago Tribune, an experience that provided the material for her best-known work, the 1926 stage play Chicago. The play was later adapted into the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name and the 2002 film, which won six Academy Awards including Best Picture.
