Melanie Joy is an American social psychologist and author who coined the term "carnism" and founded the nonprofit organization Beyond Carnism, formerly known as the Carnism Awareness & Action Network. She was a professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts Boston and has written several books on animal ethics and human behavior. Her work focuses on the psychological and cultural underpinnings of meat consumption.
