Michael David Herr was an American writer and war correspondent, best known as the author of Dispatches (1977), a memoir detailing his experiences as a correspondent for Esquire magazine during the Vietnam War. The book received critical acclaim, being described as the best written about the Vietnam War by The New York Times Book Review and praised by novelist John le Carré as "the best book I have ever read on men and war in our time." Herr's work offered a vivid and introspective account of the war's impact on soldiers and correspondents alike. He passed away on June 23, 2016.
