Michael J. Sandel, born in 1953, is an American political philosopher. He is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government Theory at Harvard University Law School. His course Justice was the first Harvard Law School course made freely available online and on television, reaching tens of millions of viewers globally, including in China, where he was named the "most influential foreign figure of the year" by China Newsweek. Sandel is also recognized for his critique of John Rawls' A Theory of Justice in his 1982 book Liberalism and the Limits of Justice. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002.
