Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin was a Russian writer, journalist, and satirist of the 19th century. He was born Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov and used the pen name Nikolai Shchedrin during his lifetime. He spent most of his life working as a civil servant in various roles. After the death of poet Nikolay Nekrasov, he became the editor of the literary magazine Otechestvenniye Zapiski, which was banned by the Tsarist government in 1884. Saltykov's works combined stark realism with satirical grotesque and elements of fantasy. His most well-known works include the family chronicle novel The Golovlyov Family (1880) and the political novel The History of a Town (1870), both of which are considered important contributions to 19th-century Russian literature. He is regarded as a major figure of Russian literary Realism.
