Mikheil Javakhishvili (1880–1937) was a Georgian and Soviet novelist regarded as one of the leading twentieth-century Georgian writers. His first story appeared in 1903, after which he fell silent for years before returning to writing in the early 1920s. His resistance to Soviet ideological pressure ultimately cost him his life: he was executed during the Great Purge, and his works were banned for nearly twenty years afterward.
