Mircea Cărtărescu (born 1 June 1956, Bucharest, Romania) is a Romanian poet, prose writer, essayist, literary critic and journalist. He is a professor at the University of Bucharest and one of the most awarded and translated Romanian writers of the post-communist period. He is a notable representative of Romanian postmodernism and has published over 30 volumes, which have been translated into 23 languages. His name has been frequently mentioned for nomination for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and he was officially proposed twice by the Romanian Writers' Union. He is best known for his ambitious trilogy Orbitor, written over a period of more than twelve years, his collection of short stories De ce iubim femeile, and the novel Solenoid.
