Miroslav Krleža (1893–1981) was a Croatian writer widely considered one of the greatest of the 20th century. He produced notable work across all literary genres, including poetry, theatre, short stories, novels and an intimate diary, often addressing themes of bourgeois hypocrisy and conformism in Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He also wrote numerous essays on art, history, politics, literature, philosophy and military strategy and was known as one of the great polemicists of the century, his style combining visionary poetic language with sarcasm.
