Montague Rhodes James (1 August 1862 – 12 June 1936) was an English author, medievalist scholar, and academic administrator. He served as provost of King's College, Cambridge, from 1905 to 1918 and as provost of Eton College from 1918 to 1936. He also held the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1913 to 1915. James is best known for his ghost stories, which are considered among the finest in the genre. He redefined the ghost story by moving away from traditional Gothic elements and using more realistic settings. His stories often reflected his scholarly interests in antiquities, leading to his recognition as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story."
