Mulk Raj Anand was an Indian writer in the English language, known for depicting the lives of the poorer class in traditional Indian society. He was one of the pioneers of Indo-Anglian fiction and gained international readership alongside R. K. Narayan and Raja Rao. His works, including the protest novel Untouchable and Coolie, are considered classics of modern Indian English literature. He incorporated Punjabi and Hindustani idioms into English and was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
