Ngaio Marsh was a New Zealand author and theatre director, born in Christchurch in 1895, who became one of the foremost writers of the Golden Age of detective fiction. She is best known for creating the urbane Scotland Yard detective Roderick Alleyn, who appeared in thirty-two novels spanning four decades. Marsh was also awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to both literature and the performing arts in New Zealand.
